LYDIA

2014

An award ceremony. In an acceptance speech, biologist Lydia Teresa Andersen thanks a number of people around her personally. The prize she receives is in recognition of her career as a researcher, which has made her a specialist in her field. However, her thank-you speech gradually turns into a confession in which she reveals some hidden facts about her life, which are not consistent with the seemingly perfect and controlled life she has always led. In this performance, Nele Vereecken puts human passion in relation to a socially, 'correct' life, in which diverse and unexpected relationships of people among themselves are at the centre. In the summer of 2012, actress Nele Vereecken wrote this monologue commissioned by t h e t h e a t e r m a k e r. The performance Lydia is her directorial debut.
