Nele Vereecken is an actor, writer and director for theatre who lives in Brussels.  Since her graduation in 2009 she has eagerly collaborated with other artists.  Alongside she develops her own work.

She considers a performer as a forwarder. . It’s through the performer and its personality that the public senses something, things might change. This artistic approach is also her political way of thinking about how to make art and how to live and work with others.

Vereecken perceives theatre more as a sequence of actions then a manifestation of theories.  She stages fictional characters and stories. Cinema and literature and fine arts are sources of inspiration. In 2014 she wrote and staged ‘Lydia’ a play about a renowned biologist that gets recognition for her career as a researcher. Slowly her award acceptance speech turns into a confession in which she reveals some hidden facts about her life.  At the end of her speech, she transforms into an animal. ‘Lydia’ was played by Mieke Verdin and shown in the KVS. She wrote the text 'Dead pigeon’, about the relativity of violence, for the performance Odium of choreographer Sara Sampelayo, which premiered in theatre Marni. In her new piece ‘angel’ she stages a fictional character based on Angela Merkel.  Her characters, written or improvised, are often unintentionally funny, tumbling into embarrassing or absurd situations. She does not find entertaining easy but always searches for humour as it goes beyond pain and can be seen as proof of a vivid society.

She is currently writing two new plays APPLAUS and DE DISTRUBIETRIEM
